background-color: var( --e-global-color-3950dbb );\">The three kinds of selves<\/span><\/h2>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a623756 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a623756\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In this article, we want to look at deep inner work from the perspective of increasing psychological flexibility.<\/p><p>Steven Hayes, PhD, intellectual godfather of the so-called third wave of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), has written extensively on the power of CBT to enhance psychological flexibility as part of what is necessary when engaging in therapeutic and coaching processes.<a style=\"font-size: 16px; text-align: start;\" href=\"#_ftnref1\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; line-height: 0; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; top: -0.5em;\">[1]<\/span><\/a><\/p><p>Psychological flexibility is a key concept in the most advanced form of CBT as well as for personal development in general, but what is it precisely?<\/p><p>Simply put, psychological flexibility is the ability to feel and think with openness, to attend voluntarily and deliberately to your experience of the present moment. It allows you to move your life in directions that are important to you &#8211; largely by building habits that allow you to live life in accordance with your values and aspirations. What&#8217;s more, psychological flexibility is about learning not to turn away from what is painful but to turn towards your suffering, which builds the foundation for living a life full of meaning and purpose.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>For understanding psychological flexibility it is valuable to understand is what Steven Hayes calls the three different \u201ckinds\u201d of selves:<\/p><ol style=\"font-size: 18px; background-color: #ffffff;\"><li style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><p style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji'; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The conceptualized self &#8211; self-as-content<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 18px;\"><p style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, 'Noto Sans', sans-serif, 'Apple Color Emoji', 'Segoe UI Emoji', 'Segoe UI Symbol', 'Noto Color Emoji'; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The experiential self &#8211; self-as-process &#8211; and<\/span><\/p><\/li><li style=\"font-size: 18px;\">The perspective-taking self &#8211; self-as-context.\u00a0<\/li><\/ol><h3><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: var( --e-global-color-text );\">The conceptualized self &#8211; self-as-content<\/span><\/h3><p>The 1st self, the conceptualized self (self-as-content), is the self-story of evaluated preferences, history, features, and attributes that are said to define oneself, especially in comparison to others. It represents the story about who you think you are and who others are in relation to you. In many spiritual schools, it is referred to the \u201cego\u201d. Examples could be \u201cI am a great driver\u201d, \u201cI am not a social person\u201d, \u201cI\u2019m friendly and generous\u201d, or \u201cI am a born leader\u201d. The problem is not the presence of a self-story, because we all have and even need one to individuate. It<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-3950dbb );\">\u00a0is an ongoing process of involvement<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-3950dbb );\">, of the processing and sharing of experience moment-to-moment. Examples could be \u201cI see the red car in front of me\u201d, \u201cI feel sad\u201d, \u201cI think about my father and how he always took me with him to sport games\u201d.\u00a0<br \/><br \/><\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-3950dbb );\">T<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-3950dbb );\">he perspective-taking self &#8211; self-as-context.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The 3rd self, the perspective-taking self (self-as-context), is the verbal \u201cI\/here\/now\u201d perspective or point of view from which observations are made. This could be a statement like \u201cThere is a part in me that thinks that I\u2019m not good enough\u201d. It is also the starting point of true state and process awareness, which could be reflected in statements such as \u201cI experience myself as feeling down often\u201d, \u201cI am having recurring thoughts and feelings of not being good enough lately\u201d or \u201cI wonder if I should quit this job considering the culture lived there doesn\u2019t correspond to my values anymore\u201d. This grants a unique opportunity to open new pathways of actively dealing with what needs to be processed (e.g. hitherto unconscious, energetically charged material) and of updating the stories you hold about yourself. When you \u201creturn\u201d from that altered state you might have a renewed or expanded sense of self with a different concept of who you think you are. Altered states of consciousness \u2013 if used intentionally and in appropriate settings &#8211; can help strengthening or expanding our perspective-taking selves. \u00a0In some cases, it might even help experiencing ourselves more as the context for our own experience (this corresponds to the construct awareness that we access in the systemic-autonomous mindset in Martin Permantier&#8217;s mindset model, covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/evolute-institute.com\/inner-work-for-leaders-series-part2-moving-into-higher-mindsets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Article 2<\/a> of this 8-part series).\u00a0<\/p><p>Furthermore, a profound experience in altered states of consciousness, such as with psilocybin truffles, can loosen the tight grip of negative or limiting self-stories we believe to be true about ourselves. In more technical terms,\u00a0identifications with a conceptualized self (self as a certain content or story, e.g. in extreme cases self-beliefs like \u201cI am a loser\u201d or \u201cI am the greatest\u201d) are being liquified and the space for new narratives and a new self-understanding can open up. This happens partly, but not exclusively, through a movement from the conceptualized self towards the experiencing self (self-as-process), a sensory process unfolding moment to moment, anchored in the embodied right hemisphere of our brains (see article 5 of this series with a focus on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/evolute-institute.com\/deep-inner-work-overcoming-cultural-conditioning-5-of-8\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overcoming cultural conditioning<\/a>\u201d). Instead of relying on a fixed idea of who we think we are (top-down information), we let ourselves be fully present in the moment. This allows us to receive new (bottom-up) information and thus weave a new, more life-affirming self-story. In ACT, this is called \u201cdefusion\u201d, one might also say disidentification from the conceptualized self, or as the wisdom traditions have it: becoming aware or &#8211; when it crosses a certain threshold &#8211; \u201cwaking up\u201d. As wisdom teacher Thomas H\u00fcbl<span style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 12.000001px; line-height: 0; position: relative; vertical-align: baseline; top: -0.5em;\"><a style=\"text-align: start; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"#_ftnref1\">[3]<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); background-color: var( --e-global-color-3950dbb );\">\u00a0points out: an aware process is held in space. However, in the case of psychological flexibility, it is clear that most of us have room for improvement towards less rigidity and more flexibility in the different flexibility processes or dimensions.\u00a0<\/p><p>Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to check if you can increase your psychological flexibility:<\/p><ul><li>Do you find yourself unable or unwilling to change your behaviour that is obviously causing difficulties in your life?<\/li><li>Do you have a tendency to avoid painful situations instead of dealing with them?<\/li><li>Do you get caught up in loops of thoughts about &#8220;what was&#8221; or &#8220;what could be&#8221; often?<\/li><li>Have you frequently in your life continued to hold on to an idea, opinion or behaviour even though a deeper part of you didn&#8217;t really believe in it (any longer)?<\/li><li>How difficult would it be for you to let go of your preferred story you tell about yourself?<\/li><li>Do you sometimes drown in \/ get carried away by a strong emotion (e.g. rage, sadness) and forget about everything else?<\/li><\/ul><p>Most human beings will likely answer with a &#8220;yes&#8221;, &#8220;sometimes&#8221;, or &#8220;difficult&#8221; to one or several of these questions. These substances, such as psilocybin mushrooms or LSD, have the potential to dissolve rigid patterns of thinking and open up new perspectives. By modulating serotonin receptors in the brain, psychedelics can induce a profound altered state of consciousness that promotes introspection and self-reflection. This altered state often leads to a loosening of ego boundaries, enabling individuals to explore their thoughts, emotions, and beliefs with increased clarity and objectivity. The heightened sense of interconnectedness experienced during a psychedelic trip can also foster empathy and compassion, promoting a greater understanding of others. Moreover, psychedelics may facilitate the revisiting and processing of past traumas or unresolved psychological issues, allowing for emotional healing and personal growth. So it is not too far-fetched to say that through their unique pharmacological effects (e.g. the enhanced neuroplasticity in the brain), psychedelics can support individuals in cultivating psychological flexibility and embracing transformative change.<\/p><p>Psychedelic experiences may provide individuals with profound insights into the impermanent and subjective nature of their thoughts and emotions, thus facilitating the cultivation of acceptance and openness.
