What makes for a great psychedelic facilitator? Which qualities does a good guide have, and how can they develop their capacities? What is the role of psychedelic guides before, during and (long) after a psychedelic ceremony? And how did Patrick end up as a psychedelic facilitator, what was his journey into this line of work? Many questions and many answers wait for you in this extended interview. This is a conversation for everyone who is interested in psychedelic facilitation, both from a retreat participant view as well as a professional orientation view and whether this line of work could be something for them. We also uncover some surprising similarities between end-of-life care / companionship and the psychedelic experience. Enjoy this rich and touching conversation….

What makes for a professional psychedelic guide? The conversation at a glance

The co-founder of Evolute Institute, Christopher Kabakis, and his guest, Patrick Liebl discuss the role of a psychedelic facilitator, emphasizing the importance of proper screening, preparation, and integration in psychedelic-assisted retreat programs. They also highlighted the significance of the integration process, which extends beyond the retreat and includes finding meaning in the experience, harvesting insights, and discussing changes to be implemented in daily life.

Christopher and Patrick also talk about the role of a guide during challenging psychedelic experiences, emphasizing the importance of presence, non-judgment, and self-awareness as well as supportive touch. They highlight the value of personal experience, training, and intervision in becoming a skilled psychedelic facilitator.

Towards the end they explore the similarities of psychedelic experiences with the dying process and what Patrick has learnt from his work in end-of-life care and grief work and how this informs him today when facilitating psychedelic retreat experiences.
