About Evolute Institute
Evolute Institute is a personal- and leadership-development organization founded by Dr. Dmitrij Achelrod (PhD, Health Economics, University of Hamburg & University of Oxford) and Christopher Kabakis (M.Sc., Affiliate Professor, ESCP Europe Business School). We run structured retreat programs – EvoSHIFT (psilocybin-assisted) and EvoDARK (darkness-based) – combining psychedelic-assisted process work, somatic coaching, and consciousness-focused practices for professionals seeking measurable inner development.
Three concrete differentiators: a 1:2 facilitator-to-participant ratio during every EvoSHIFT ceremony (one facilitator for every two participants), a Medical Doctor physically present on-site throughout the ceremony – not on call – and medical and psychiatric screening conducted by a psychiatrist before acceptance. Our multidisciplinary team combines licensed psychologists, MAPS-trained facilitators, executive coaches, and somatic practitioners within a legal, structured, science-informed setting focused on vertical development – how you make sense of your experience, not just what you know.
Evolute Institute is both the subject of published academic research and a gateway to ongoing studies open to its retreat participants. Published research includes “The Role of Psychedelics in Mindful and Resilient Leadership” (Leuphana University & University of St. Gallen), a study on psychedelics and empathetic leadership (Hochschule für angewandtes Management), and “Can Magic Mushrooms Make Better Leaders?” (ESCP Business School). Anyone planning a retreat can also join currently open studies, including the University of Exeter’s research on the psychological effects of guided psychedelic and plant medicine use, the UCSF/Carhart-Harris Lab’s Global Psychedelic Survey, and a University of Amsterdam study on therapist competencies – participation is voluntary and never affects admission. See our full Psilocybin Research page for study details and how to join.
Yes. Evolute’s programs and founders have been covered by Der Spiegel, NZZ, Manager Magazin, ZDF, and Der Tagesspiegel – reporting that has focused on the rise of psychedelic-assisted coaching among executives and the practicalities of legal psilocybin retreats in the Netherlands.
As of July 2026, Evolute Institute has 51 reviews on Trustpilot, every one of them 5 stars. Read the full reviews on Trustpilot, or browse first-person accounts on our Testimonials page.
– EvoSHIFT — a 12-week program (preparation, a multi-day on-site psilocybin ceremony in the Netherlands, and integration) for professionals and leaders.
– EvoDARK — a substance-free darkness retreat in Germany’s Black Forest for deep introspection without psychoactive substances.
– 1:1 Coaching — standalone psychedelic integration coaching.
– Private Retreats — a custom, individual or very-small-group version of EvoSHIFT.
EvoSHIFT and EvoDARK are designed for people ready to take responsibility for their own growth and, often, for the people around them — many hold leadership roles (C-level, founders, directors), but admission is decided by individual video/phone interview, not job title. Every applicant goes through this interview before final admission to assess fit.
Yes. EvoDARK is entirely substance-free — deep inner work through extended darkness rather than psilocybin.
We publish the standard we hold ourselves to, rather than asking you to take these claims on trust. The Psilocybin Retreat Evaluation Framework is a ten-domain, evidence-graded protocol for evaluating any psilocybin retreat provider – what to check before, during, and after a retreat, with explicit stop-signs. Evolute’s own EvoSHIFT Provider Self-Disclosure answers that framework’s Ten Essential Questions directly, domain by domain – including our 1:2 facilitator ratio, the Medical Doctor physically on-site during every ceremony, and our psychiatric screening process.
ON psilocybin-truffles & Altered states of consciousness
Altered states of consciousness (ASC) are not the goal of our programs — they’re the instrument. Temporarily loosening rigid mental and behavioral patterns increases openness to change (associated with increased neuroplasticity), which is why, given the right preparation, setting, and integration, a psychedelic experience can catalyze development that might otherwise take years.
We use a combination of methods to induce ASC, including breathwork, mindfulness meditation, and bodywork. In EvoSHIFT, the primary method is legal psilocybin-containing truffles (“magic truffles”), which participants purchase themselves from a licensed Dutch smartshop.
Participants in EvoSHIFT consume legal, psilocybin-containing truffles on the day of their guided ceremony. Participants purchase these independently from a licensed Dutch vendor – Evolute does not manufacture, sell, prescribe, or supply the substance.
Clinical research shows psilocybin is physiologically safe with no known addictive properties in screened, supervised settings – though certain physical or mental health conditions and medications can make it less safe for a given individual, which is why screening happens before acceptance. EvoSHIFT‘s safety model has four parts:
– Screening — a licensed psychiatrist reviews a written questionnaire and conducts an approximately 40-minute interview before acceptance, and makes the final medical and psychiatric eligibility decision.
– Preparation — live individual and group sessions covering risk, product/dose uncertainty, and what to expect.
– Facilitation — a 1:2 facilitator-to-participant ratio during the ceremony, with a Medical Doctor physically present in the ceremony space throughout — not on call.
– Integration — structured individual and group follow-up after the retreat.
For the full evidence base behind this model, see our Professional Standards for Psilocybin Retreats and how EvoSHIFT measures against it — this is a decision aid, not medical advice; only you and your own physician can determine whether participation is right for you.
Integration doesn’t stop when the retreat does. Every EvoSHIFT participant goes through structured individual and group integration sessions as part of the core 12-week program, and afterward has ongoing access to Evolute’s alumni community for as long as they want to stay involved – free quarterly integration calls, continued peer support, and occasional local events. The program is designed as an entry point into a longer developmental process, not a single event that ends with the ceremony.
In the Netherlands, psychedelic psilocybin-containing truffles are legal. In contrast, psychedelic mushrooms were classified as a scheduled substance in 2007. You will have to buy these legal truffles from authorized vendors (e.g. smartshops) in the Netherlands and bring them to the retreat.
Because acute psychedelic effects can interact with certain medications and psychiatric conditions, every EvoSHIFT applicant completes a written health questionnaire and a screening interview with a licensed psychiatrist before acceptance – the psychiatrist, not sales or program staff, makes the final eligibility decision, which may be to accept, accept with conditions, refer for specialist review, defer, or decline. This process does not diagnose or treat any condition; it exists solely to assess whether a non-clinical retreat is an appropriate context for you, and the final judgment on your medical fitness always rests with you and your own healthcare provider.
EvoSHIFT - Psilocybin Retreat
EvoSHIFT ceremonies take place in groups of 6 to 10 participants, personally reviewed and selected by the founders for compatibility, readiness, and seriousness of intent, in a private, purpose-designed indoor space at Centrum Athanor in the Netherlands. A Medical Doctor is physically present throughout, alongside 4 to 5 participant-support facilitators maintaining a 1:2 ratio or better.
Preparation is required before the on-site retreat; integration is strongly encouraged for full effect. You may decide, even at short notice, not to consume truffles during the ceremony – alternative content is provided, and you’re always free to discuss that decision with a facilitator first.
Shared vulnerability and peer witnessing are associated with stronger outcomes in group psychedelic settings – group dynamics support trust-building and emotional processing that individual work alone doesn’t replicate. That said, groups are capped at 6 to 10 participants and personally curated by the founders specifically to protect this dynamic.
Cohorts are personally selected by the founders for compatibility, readiness, and seriousness of intent – typically peer-level professionals at a broadly similar life stage, not admitted on a first-come-first-served basis.
Individual participation is generally recommended, since the presence of people close to you can sometimes affect how openly you engage. We’re glad to discuss your specific situation and find the right approach for you.
No. EvoSHIFT is a non-clinical personal-development program, not psychotherapy or medical treatment, and does not diagnose or treat mental illness. If you require clinical care, our screening process is designed to identify that and refer you appropriately rather than admit you into a context that can’t safely support you.
EvoDARK - Darkness Retreat
A darkness retreat is an advanced introspective practice where participants spend several days in complete darkness to promote deep inner reflection and healing. Without visual distractions, a form of sensory deprivation, the mind turns inward, often resulting in heightened awareness, emotional clarity, and personal transformation. Modern retreats, like our EvoDARK darkness retreats in Germany, offer a safe and guided environment for this experience.
Our darkness retreats take place in The Black Forest in Germany, in a purpose-built facility designed to support this intense inward journey. The location offers complete isolation, quiet, and full darkness for the duration of your retreat.
No. Darkness retreats are 100% substance-free. They are ideal for individuals seeking a non-psychedelic transformational retreat focused purely on silence, solitude, and introspection.
Participants often report reduced stress, improved mental clarity, emotional healing, and increased mindfulness. The retreat helps reset the nervous system, supports the processing of difficult life experiences, and may foster insights into life purpose and unresolved issues – all without external substances.
Yes. Darkness retreats have ancient roots in Tibetan Buddhist traditions and are now supported by research in sensory deprivation, which contribute to enhanced well-being and introspection.
Scientific research supports the benefits of sensory deprivation, showing reductions in stress, improvements in mental health, and enhancements in creativity and cognitive clarity.
Retreats typically last from a few days to several weeks. EvoDARK, for instance, is a 7-day program with 4 days and 5 nights in total darkness, complemented by a guided preparation and integration period to maximize the experience’s effectiveness.
Anyone seeking deep personal growth or spiritual insight may benefit from a darkness retreat. It’s especially powerful for those feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or looking for clarity and transformation. However, individuals with certain mental health conditions should consult a healthcare professional before participating.
You’ll spend time meditating, reflecting, and resting. Initially, some disorientation is normal, but over time, the senses sharpen, and many experience vivid dreams, emotional breakthroughs, and spiritual insights. The darkness allows you to observe your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations without external input.
The EvoDARK retreat by Evolute Institute is the world’s first group darkness retreat, held in the Black Forest, Germany. It combines the ancient power of darkness immersion with modern psychological support, offering a safe, profound, and transformational group experience.
You’ll have periods of solitude in darkness to support deep personal exploration, but you are never isolated – the program includes guided group preparation and integration, and the Evolute team is always reachable during the retreat itself.
Yes, absolutely. During your time in darkness, you will receive daily one-on-one support through process work sessions with an experienced facilitator. The team is also available at any time should you need additional assistance. You are never left without access to guidance and care.
Extended solitude and sensory deprivation can surface intense emotions – anxiety, fear, or overwhelm are possible. This is why EvoDARK is professionally facilitated throughout: preparation beforehand, close monitoring during the retreat, and structured integration afterward are what make the format safe, not the absence of difficulty.
