What is Mindset Expansion & How Does it Work?

On Nov. 6th 2023, we had the priviledge to learn about Mindset Expansion with Martin Permantier, author of “Mindset Matters” and “Mindset expansion” and renowned expert in the field of personal and leadership development.

In this conversation, we explored what it means to “expand” our mindset and how we can develop our inner capacities, with or without altered states of consciousness. Christopher Kabakis, Co-Founder of Evolute Institute, will lead the discussion with Martin.

We created a summary of different parts of the Expert Talk!

Introduction

“Welcome everybody to tonight’s Evolute Expert Talk. Tonight we’re joined by Martin Panier, a jack of all trades with a 30-year journey as an entrepreneur, consultant, and business owner. His company, Shortcuts, focuses on corporate identity and communication marketing strategy Consulting, evolving towards values consulting, aligning deeply with what’s important for us individually, for teams, and for organizations.”

Understanding Mind and Mindset

Martin begins by differentiating between the mind and mindset: “The mind is essentially the seat of consciousness, perceiving reality directly. In contrast, the mindset is our way of translating these perceptions into our personal narrative or ego. This process, deeply influenced by language, shapes our self-identity and world understanding.”

Martin further delves into the distinction between mind and mindset: “Well, you already put me in the difficult realm of words… the mindset is about words and constructing meaning in words whereas the mind, as I understand, would be, let’s say, the seat of Consciousness and… the faculty to perceive something consciously.” He articulates the mind as our core consciousness and the mindset as our interpretative layer of this consciousness.

The Journey of Mindset Evolution Through Life

Martin traces the evolution of our mindset: “You started as a baby and you didn’t have a proper mindset, it was just you looking at the world just with this one perspective… then, when you were two or three, language came into play and… you get a second perspective on life.” He highlights the critical role of language in shaping our self-identity and worldview.

The Role of Mindset in Personal Development

Discussing mindset in personal development, Martin says, “The mind that experiences reality and then there’s mindset who retranslate it into who I am and my self story… it’s your character changes, your interpersonal style changes, your cognitive style changes, and your attention focus changes.” This portion underscores the transformative power of mindset on our personal narratives and perceptions.

Sustainable Mindset Expansion

A participant inquires about sustaining mindset expansion, especially after profound experiences like altered states or psychedelic use. Martin highlights the importance of language and self-narratives in this process. He emphasizes the necessity of integrating experiences, both emotional and psychological, into one’s ongoing personal narrative, suggesting that true mindset expansion is a continuous journey requiring practice, support, and reflection.

The Role of Altered States in Development

Exploring the role of altered states in mindset development, Martin discusses how such experiences can catalyze personal growth. These states often bring forth emotional and cognitive challenges, demanding reinterpretation and integration into existing mindsets. This process can be transformative, leading to greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of one’s subjective experiences.

Concluding Reflections and Audience Interaction

As the session draws to a close, Martin and the audience reflect on the day’s discussions. Participants share their takeaways, emphasizing the simplicity yet profound nature of mindset work, the significance of language in shaping reality, and the journey of continuous self-evolution. Martin concludes with optimistic remarks about the potential for personal and collective growth through mindset expansion.
