What is a Psilocybin Ceremony?
Discover what happens inside a safe, guided, and transformative legal psilocybin ceremony.
What is a psilocybin ceremony?
At the heart of the EvoSHIFT program in the Netherlands lies the psilocybin ceremony, a deeply personal and carefully guided journey of self-exploration. Every detail, from how the truffles are prepared to how participants are supported after the session, is designed to create a setting of warmth, safety, and genuine transformation.
The research consistently shows that the quality of preparation is one of the strongest predictors of how meaningful and integrative the experience will be. 1 This is why we encourage participants to familiarize themselves with: what psilocybin is, the role it can play in personal development, and the structure of our set & setting and integration.
What does a psilocybin ceremony look like?
Preparing the Psilocybin Truffles
The ceremony begins with a mindful, communal act: preparing the psilocybin truffles together. Participants gently grind the truffles and brew them into a warm tea. Consuming truffles as tea — rather than raw — significantly reduces the likelihood of nausea during onset and allows for a smoother, more gradual beginning to the experience.
This ritual invites mindfulness and presence, transforming the act of preparation into the beginning of the journey.
A Deeply Supported Psychedelic Experience
Groups of 6–10 participants ensure genuine intimacy and personal attention throughout the session. Our facilitator-to-participant ratio of 1:2 is among the most attentive in the industry — meaning there is always someone close, present, and available to every participant throughout the journey.
Our trained facilitators combine backgrounds in psychology, coaching, and somatic awareness, always prioritizing emotional safety and compassionate presence. A licensed medical doctor is on-site throughout every ceremony — not on call, but physically present — providing the highest standard of medical oversight and an additional layer of safety and reassurance for participants.2
The Ceremonial Space and Setting
The physical setting is not background — it is part of the medicine. The ceremonial space is designed to feel warm, cosy, and safe: soft lighting, natural scents, comfortable mattresses and blankets. Participants are invited to lie down, cover their eyes with an eye mask, and turn inward as a carefully curated music journey unfolds.
Research shows that music acts as a "hidden therapist"3, guiding emotion and insight during psychedelic sessions. Our playlists are crafted with this science in mind: a blend of instrumental, ambient, and world sounds that support a safe and transformative unfolding. Throughout, the facilitators remain close, quietly present, ready to offer support or grounding touch.
Grounding with Care
After approximately 5–6 hours, the active effects of the psilocybin experience begin to gently fade. As participants return, they are offered fresh fruit, warm golden milk, and light snacks — simple nourishment that helps the body and nervous system re-orient.
There is no expectation to speak, process, or make meaning immediately. The evening after the ceremony is unstructured and self-directed: participants may rest, journal, draw, or simply sit in quiet presence. Verbal sharing and facilitated reflection happen the following morning, in a group circle where the space has been properly held for what has just occurred.
This sequencing — experience first, language later — is intentional. Research suggests that premature verbalization can interrupt the natural consolidation of insights, while allowing the experience to settle overnight before group sharing tends to produce richer, more embodied reflection.4
Integrity and Ethics at Every Step
Every ceremony at Evolute Institute is conducted according to a formal code of professional and ethical standards. We are guided by the North Star Ethics Pledge and the Guild of Guides Code of Ethics — two of the most widely recognised frameworks in professional psychedelic facilitation.
These standards shape how we practice: informed consent is obtained before every retreat; participant confidentiality is strictly maintained; boundaries between facilitator and participant are clearly defined and upheld; and all facilitators participate in ongoing professional supervision. We are transparent about the potential challenges of psychedelic experiences — not only their potential benefits — because we believe genuine care requires honesty.
Psilocybin experiences can be powerful, sometimes confronting, and occasionally difficult. We hold space for all of that — with integrity, not avoidance.
Who Facilitates the Psilocybin Ceremony?
"The quality of a psilocybin ceremony depends, above all, on the quality of the people holding the space. At Evolute Institute, every ceremony is led by a team of experienced professionals.
Frequently asked questions
What is a psilocybin ceremony?
A psilocybin ceremony is a structured, intentional group experience in which participants consume psilocybin — in the form of legal psilocybin truffles in the Netherlands — in a carefully prepared physical and emotional environment. Unlike recreational use, a ceremony includes professional facilitation, a curated setting (music, lighting, scent), and is embedded within a broader program of preparation and integration. At Evolute Institute, the ceremony is the centrepiece of our 12-week EvoSHIFT program — not a standalone event.
What happens during a psilocybin ceremony?
Participants begin by mindfully preparing their psilocybin truffle tea together. Once consumed, they lie down comfortably in a warm ceremonial space with an eye mask and listen to a carefully curated music playlist. The active experience lasts approximately 5–6 hours. Throughout, trained facilitators remain close — offering quiet presence, grounding touch, or emotional support as needed. A licensed medical doctor is on-site at all times. After the peak fades, participants are gently grounded with nourishment and rest. Verbal sharing and integration happen the following morning.
How long does a psilocybin ceremony last?
The active psilocybin experience lasts approximately 5–6 hours, with onset 20–60 minutes after drinking the truffle tea and peak effects around 2–3 hours. Including preparation, the experience, and grounding afterward, the full ceremony day typically spans 8–10 hours. The following morning includes a facilitated group sharing circle and initial integration.
How are psilocybin truffles consumed at the ceremony?
Participants grind the truffles and brew them into a warm tea. Consuming truffles as tea — rather than raw — significantly reduces the likelihood of nausea during onset and allows for a smoother, more gradual beginning. The preparation itself is part of the ceremonial ritual: a mindful transition from ordinary time into the experience.
Can I feel unwell during the ceremony?
Some participants experience mild nausea during the onset — this is common and usually passes within 20–40 minutes. Preparing the truffles as tea significantly reduces this risk compared to eating them raw. Our facilitators may offer citrus oil or peppermint to ease any discomfort. Emotional intensity — including difficult emotions, fear, or confusion — is also possible. This is a normal part of the process, and our facilitators are specifically trained to hold space for challenging experiences with compassion. You are never alone in this.
Is it safe to attend a psilocybin ceremony?
At Evolute Institute, safety is the foundation of everything we do. Key safety measures include: thorough medical and psychological screening before every retreat; clear contraindications (see above); a 1:2 facilitator-to-participant ratio; a licensed physician on-site throughout the ceremony; a small group size (6–10 participants); and a legally compliant framework — psilocybin truffles are legal in the Netherlands. Psilocybin is not physiologically addictive and has a well-established safety profile, but it is not suitable for everyone — which is why screening is non-negotiable.
Who should not attend a psilocybin ceremony?
Participation is not appropriate for individuals with a personal or family history of psychosis, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder with psychotic features; those currently taking SSRIs, MAOIs, lithium, or tramadol; those with severe cardiovascular conditions; those who are pregnant or breastfeeding; or those with active suicidal ideation without professional support. Every applicant is screened by our medical team before acceptance. If you are unsure about your suitability, please book a confidential exploratory call before applying.
