Safety, Ethics and Professional Standards for our Psilocybin Retreat (EvoSHIFT)

Why We Publish This

Studies of publicly advertised psychedelic retreats have found a large and diverse international industry, limited public disclosure, and substantial variation in reported safety practices, from medication washout policy to whether a medical professional is present at all (Neitzke-Spruill et al., 2025; McGuire et al., 2026). A prospective participant is generally asked to take a provider's reassurance on trust, with little to check it against.

Evolute Institute is a commercial retreat provider, which means our own account of ourselves carries a conflict of interest no self-report can fully remove. Rather than fold everything into one reassuring, glossy marketing page, we publish the Psilocybin Retreat Evaluation Framework (PREF) separately from our own performance against it. The Psilocybin Retreat Evaluation Framework is a neutral, evidence-graded document, published openly for other researchers, health service providers, and retreat providers to use, adapt, and collaborate on, and usable to judge any provider, including us. The EvoSHIFT Provider Self-Disclosure is our own report against that same standard, domain by domain, stating plainly where we consider ourselves strong and where we do not. Neither document claims to be independent certification.

How This Hub Is Organized

The pages below split into two groups, because we believe separating program design and organizational accountability lead to more transparent safety self-disclosure. One group describes the program itself. The other describes the organization running it, independent of any single retreat date.

1. Program Design Safety

What a participant goes through: who is admitted, what the weeks around the ceremony look like, and what the consumed substance and the dose is.

Who Is Admitted, and Under What Conditions?

Certain conditions and medications rule out a psilocybin session entirely, with no individual exception, and some reasons to wait are about timing rather than medicine. Our psilocybin retreat admission and screening sets out our absolute exclusion criteria, the situations where it is better to wait, and how the screening decision is made and by whom.

What Does the Program Look Like Around the Ceremony?

A single ceremony day sits inside a twelve-week structure of preparation, on-site immersion, and integration. Our psilocybin retreat curriculum design lays out that structure session by session and explains why the weeks before and after the ceremony matter as much as the day itself.

What Substance and Dose Will Participants Receive?

Participants will consume psilocybin truffles. Potency varies between strains and batches, and the weight of the truffles will not tell you how much active compound they contain. Psilocybin truffle dosage explains how concentration is measured, why weight alone has never been a reliable proxy, and what changes when a dose is expressed in milligrams.

2. Organizational Safety

How Evolute itself is structured, governed, and held accountable, independent of any single retreat: the standard we publish and ask to be judged by, our own report against it, the ethical commitments that bind every facilitator, and the physical environment the program runs inside.

What Standard Should Any Provider Be Held To?

We co-authored and publish an evidence-graded standard covering ten domains across three phases, from screening through to alumni community, with every standard labelled by the strength of evidence behind it. The Psilocybin Retreat Evaluation Framework (PREF) is released openly, for other researchers, health service providers, and retreat providers to use, adapt, and collaborate on. Prospective participants are equally free to read it and use it to evaluate any provider.

How Does Evolute Report Against That Standard?

Publishing a standard and meeting it are different claims. The EvoSHIFT provider self-disclosure works through the same ten domains and reports where we consider ourselves strong and where we do not: nine domains at strong practice, one flagged for verification, none at stop.

What Ethical Commitments Bind Every Facilitator?

Consent, confidentiality, the participant's right to pause or leave, and what happens if a facilitator crosses a line are not left to individual judgment. Psilocybin retreat ethical guidelines sets out Evolute's own code of conduct, how a concern can be raised outside the facilitation team, and how it aligns with the North Star Ethics Pledge.

Where Do Evolute's Psychedelic Retreats Take Place, and What Happens in an Emergency?

Psilocybin retreat physical safety covers the venue, medical staff present, the nearest emergency department and realistic ambulance response time.

What Distinguishes Evolute's Safety Standards?

• A licensed psychiatrist or Medical Doctor specialized in psychotherapy makes the final medical and psychiatric decision for every EvoSHIFT participant, after an extensive written questionnaire and an approximately 30-minute private interview.
• A Medical Doctor is physically present in the ceremony space throughout the psychedelic session, not just "on call".
• EvoSHIFT maintains a 1:2 facilitator-to-participant ratio or better during the session, with 4 to 5 skilled facilitators for cohorts of 6 to 10 participants.
• The psilocybin concentration of the truffle batch used at each retreat is measured directly, and doses are set in milligrams of psilocybin rather than grams of truffle.

None of that makes a retreat a clinical setting, and we do not claim it does. EvoSHIFT is a non-clinical, evidence-informed personal development programme operating with legal psilocybin truffles in the Netherlands.
