Psilocybin Retreat Admission & Screening: Who Is Accepted, and How
How the screening process works, who makes the final decision, and the absolute medical contraindications that rule a psilocybin session out entirely.
Maintained by: Evolute Institute · Last reviewed: 07 August 2026
Medical and psychiatric eligibility at Evolute is decided by a licensed psychiatrist or Medical Doctor specialized in psychotherapy - not merely by a facilitator, an intake form, and never overridden for commercial reasons.
Psilocybin retreat admission and screening is the process that decides who is accepted onto a retreat, who is declined, and why - covering the screening process itself, the absolute medical contraindications that rule a session out with no individual exception, the situations where it is better to wait, and which approach, if any, fits your circumstances.
Our legal psilocybin retreat is a structured, multi-day programme combining medical screening, preparation, a facilitated psilocybin session, and integration support. It is designed for psychologically stable adults without an acute psychiatric condition who are seeking clarity, deeper self-understanding, or renewed connection. It is not a treatment for an active mental health crisis, and not a fit for everyone at every point in their life.
How Does Admission and Screening Work?
Every applicant completes a written medical and psychiatric questionnaire, followed by a private interview of approximately 30-40 minutes with a licensed psychiatrist or MD specializing in psychotherapy. The MD, not a facilitator or commercial staff, makes the safety-eligibility decision. That decision has five possible outcomes: accept, accept with conditions, refer for specialist review, defer, or decline. Findings outside the retreat's non-clinical scope, unresolved medication or health risks, acute psychological or physiological instability, or a need for care the group model cannot safely provide all lead to further review, deferral, or decline rather than automatic acceptance. This exact process, including who makes the final call and what triggers each outcome, is published in full in the EvoSHIFT Provider Self-Disclosure (Domain 1).
The standard this screening process is built against, and the standard any retreat provider's screening could be judged by, is published separately and neutrally in the Psilocybin Retreat Evaluation Framework (PREF) (Domain 1: Medical and Psychiatric Screening).
Is Evolute's psilocybin retreat right for me?
If you are functioning well by outside measures but sense that something important is stuck or missing, or you would like to deepen your journey of personal growth and development, that is the profile our programs are mainly built for. You do not need prior experience with psychedelics. What matters more is a genuine, self-directed reason for being there, and enough psychological stability to sit with an intense experience without it tipping into crisis.
Research on psilocybin in screened, healthy volunteers in a supportive setting has documented experiences of substantial and lasting personal meaning (e.g. see Griffiths, Richards, McCann, & Jesse, 2006). Studies like these are frequently cited as the reason this work is taken seriously outside clinical settings.
Please note our retreats are not a clinical treatment. If you are in the middle of an acute depressive episode, active PTSD, complex trauma that has not been worked through with a professional, active suicidality, or a recent psychiatric hospitalisation, a licensed clinical setting is the right next step. A responsible screening process will tell you that directly rather than admit you anyway.
What are the absolute contraindications for a psilocybin retreat?
The absolute psilocybin retreat contraindications below rule out a session with us entirely, with no individual exception.
| Category | Contraindication |
|---|---|
| Medication | Lithium, at any dose |
| Medication | MAOIs, including irreversible types |
| Psychiatric history | Schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder |
| Psychiatric history | Bipolar I disorder |
| Psychiatric history | Delusional or paranoid disorder |
| Psychiatric history | Active suicidal ideation |
| Physiological | Pregnancy or breastfeeding |
| Physiological | Recent cardiac event, uncontrolled hypertension, or severe coronary artery disease |
| Physiological | History of seizures or epilepsy |
The lithium exclusion is worth explaining, because it is the one people most often question. An analysis of online psychedelic experience reports found that of 62 reports describing lithium combined with a classic psychedelic, 47% involved seizures; in the smaller psilocybin-specific subset, 2 of 6 reports did. None of the 34 lamotrigine reports involved a seizure (Nayak, Gukasyan, Barrett, Erowid, Erowid, & Griffiths, 2021). Self-reported online data is a weak evidence base in general - but a signal this strong, for an outcome this serious, is exactly the kind of risk that we treat as an absolute exclusion rather than something to weigh case by case.
The decision to exclude an applicant is made by a licensed psychiatrist or MD after a written questionnaire and a private interview - never only by self-assessment, and never overridden by commercial staff.
Of course, there are many cases where the decision is less clear-cut, e.g. an applicant had a history of depression and SSRI intake, but now is stabilized and has discontinued medication. This is exactly where the sreening with the MD will bring more clarity on a case-by-case basis.
When should I wait, even without an absolute psilocybin retreat contraindication?
Some reasons to hold off are not purely medical. They can be about timing, attitute, and your general life situation.
- You are in the middle of an acute emotional crisis or a recent major loss.
- You are attending mainly because someone else pushed you into it, rather than from your own motivation.
- You have no plan for support in the days and weeks after you return home.
- You are expecting the session to guarantee a specific, predetermined outcome.
- A previous difficult psychedelic experience has not yet been worked through with a professional.
- You cannot tolerate or not willing to any loosening of ordinary self-control, even in a fully supported and consented setting.
Almost none of these factors are permanent. They usually mean “not yet,” not “not ever.”
Which of our retreats fits you?
An absolute psilocybin contraindication rules out a psilocybin session. It does not rule out the inner work itself - a distinction people frequently miss when screening themselves out. Evolute offers four approaches.
| Approach | Best suited to |
|---|---|
| EvoSHIFT (group) | No absolute contraindication; seeking both personal depth and shared, relational connection |
| Private Retreat | No absolute contraindication; potential trauma history that requires more attention, or a strong preference for full individual focus |
| EvoDARK (darkness retreat) | No absolute contraindication; anyone wanting deep introspection without a psychoactive substance |
| 1:1 Integration Coaching | Processing a previous psychedelic experience, or preparing well ahead of a future retreat, without a psychedelic session itself |
Group or private: how do I choose?
The two formats are not a quality tier. They differ in the mechanism through which the work happens.
What does a private retreat offer?
A private retreat puts one participant's full arc - preparation, session, and integration - in the hands of a dedicated facilitator, calibrated entirely to that person's history and intentions. No shared emotional space, no social self-monitoring, no awareness of being observed. Psychedelic researchers have argued that the therapeutic action of psilocybin is fundamentally reliant on context, both psychological and environmental, not on the substance alone (Carhart-Harris et al., 2018). For some people, the context that works best is one with no one else present. This format tends to fit if you:
- Carry a significant trauma history, particularly relational or sexual trauma, where the presence of strangers during a vulnerable state may be contraindicated
- Need strong containment to soften habitual self-protective patterns
- Notice you open inward more in solitude than in company
- Want the full therapeutic focus to stay on your own process throughout
What does a group retreat offer?
A group retreat introduces something a private format structurally cannot: communitas, the sense of connection that emerges when people move through altered states alongside each other. A 2021 Imperial College London study found that this shared intersubjective experience predicted enduring gains in psychological wellbeing and social connectedness, and that the strongest predictor of communitas itself was perceived emotional support during the ceremony (Kettner et al., 2021). It echoes a much older finding from group psychotherapy research: universality, altruism, and interpersonal learning are among the most consistently potent curative factors in group settings (Yalom & Leszcz, 2005). Witnessing someone else's process, and being witnessed in yours, is often where the shift happens - not despite the group, but because of it. This format tends to fit if you:
- Feel steadied and opened by the presence of others, rather than contracted by it
- Are seeking relational healing - patterns of disconnection, isolation, or difficulty belonging
- Do not carry a trauma history that would make shared vulnerable states contraindicated
Two practical questions if you are still unsure. Does your nervous system soften more in solitude, or around others? And do you get more from focused individual attention, or from witnessing and being witnessed? Whichever answer feels more true is usually a better guide than reasoning it out abstractly.

FAQ: Psilocybin Retreat Contraindications
Do I need prior psychedelic experience to attend?
No. Prior experience is neither required nor predictive of a better outcome. Readiness and clarity of intention matter more.
What if I'm on antidepressants?
SSRIs and SNRIs are not an absolute exclusion, but any washout must be physician-supervised and never self-directed. A 2023 Johns Hopkins retrospective survey study found psilocybin effects were substantially weakened both during antidepressant use and within two years of stopping (Gukasyan, Griffiths, Yaden, Antoine, & Nayak, 2023) – one reason this is assessed individually during screening rather than treated as a simple yes or no.
I have a contraindication - is there nothing for me?
A psilocybin-specific contraindication does not rule out the underlying work. EvoDARK and 1:1 integration coaching involve no psychoactive substance and may be the right starting point.
Who actually makes the final decision on whether I can participate?
A licensed psychiatrist, after a written questionnaire and a private
interview of approximately 40 minutes. Not a facilitator, and not commercial staff.
