What the physical space at our venue provides, and exactly how far emergency medical help is.
Psilocybin retreat physical safety covers what the venue itself provides in terms of physical protection, and how quickly outside emergency help can reach the site. This page publishes the driving distance to the nearest hospital with a round-the-clock emergency department and the Dutch national ambulance response standard that applies to our venue's region. What Does the Venue Itself Provide?
EvoSHIFT runs at Centrum Athanor, Hooislagen 9, 7241 NJ Lochem, in the Gelderland region of the Netherlands. The property combines indoor ceremony and living space with private outdoor grounds.
The Indoor Ceremony Room
The ceremony itself takes place indoors, on a wooden floor with mattresses and cushions arranged in a circle around a central altar, kept private from the rest of the property for the duration of the session.
The Moon Temple: Preparation and Integration Space
The grounds also include an outdoor stone circle, referred to on-site as the Moon Temple, used for preparation and integration work - not the psilocybin session itself, which takes place in the indoor ceremony room.
Common Areas and Marked Exits
Shared indoor space includes a common living room with direct, marked access to the outdoors - visible in this photo is one of the property's illuminated emergency exit signs, positioned directly above a glass door leading out to the garden.
Private En-Suite Rooms
Highly vulnerable experiences need privacy - to let go fully during the process, and to process what comes up afterward without an audience. Participants stay in private en-suite rooms, as published in the EvoSHIFT Provider Self-Disclosure (Domain 8).
Entrance Path and Grounds
The three-hectare grounds are private, tree-lined, and away from public roads - deliberately a natural setting rather than a clinical or urban one. That matters for this kind of work: space to walk, sit outdoors, and be with what arises, away from noise and distraction.
What Happens in a Fire or Evacuation?
Every retreat needs a clear answer to a basic question: if the building needs to be evacuated, what happens? Marked emergency exits are in place throughout the shared indoor spaces at Centrum Athanor - one is visible directly above the garden doors in the common living room, shown in the Common Areas photo above.
Centrum Athanor keeps a legally required guest register (nachtregister) of everyone staying on-site - a standard Dutch legal obligation for businesses offering overnight accommodation, kept specifically so the fire brigade can account for who is present at the location during an emergency. The venue's own booking terms also restrict open flame use as a fire-prevention measure: candles are permitted only in heat-resistant holders in shared spaces, and are not permitted in the bedrooms at all.
How Quickly Can Emergency Medical Help Reach You?
Two separate things determine this: how fast an ambulance can reach the venue, and how far the nearest hospital with a full, round-the-clock emergency department is if a participant needs to be transported.
Nearest 24-hour emergency department
The closest hospital in raw distance is Gelre Ziekenhuizen's Zutphen location, roughly 18-20 km away. Its emergency department, however, is reported to operate limited hours (daytime and evening, not overnight) rather than a full 24/7 service. Deventer Ziekenhuis, roughly 20 km away (about a 25-minute drive), operates a full 24-hour, 7-day emergency department and is the more reliable answer to "nearest 24/7 hospital."

Ambulance response time
The Netherlands sets a single national planning standard for emergency ambulance dispatch: an ambulance should reach an A1 (life-threatening) call within 15 minutes of notification - 12 minutes of travel plus 3 minutes for dispatch - and regional ambulance services are required to meet this in 95% of A1 calls under the Tijdelijke wet ambulancezorg. This is a decades-old planning benchmark, not a medical guarantee, and rural regions in the Netherlands do not always meet it: national reporting has found the 15-minute target missed in roughly one in ten A1 calls, with rural and border regions performing worse than the national average.
