Magic Mushroom Retreats in the Netherlands: What's Legal — and What Isn't
If you're searching for a magic mushroom retreat in the Netherlands, there's something most retreat websites won't tell you upfront: magic mushrooms are illegal here, and have been since 2008. Every legitimate "mushroom retreat" in the Netherlands — including ours — works with psilocybin truffles instead: a legal, naturally occurring form of the same organism, containing the same active compound. The Short Answer
Magic mushrooms (the fruiting bodies of psilocybin fungi) were banned in the Netherlands in December 2008. Psilocybin truffles — the underground sclerotia of the same fungi — were not covered by the ban and remain legal to purchase, possess, and use. Legal Dutch retreats therefore use truffles, never mushrooms. A retreat that advertises actual mushrooms in the Netherlands is either mislabeling truffles or operating outside the law.

What's Biologically Different
Magic mushrooms and psilocybin truffles come from the same fungus. The mushroom is the above-ground fruiting body; the truffle (technically a sclerotium) is a dense, underground survival structure the fungus forms when conditions are harsh. Both contain psilocybin and psilocin — the compounds responsible for the psychedelic experience. Your brain does not distinguish between psilocybin from a mushroom and psilocybin from a truffle: once ingested, both convert to psilocin and act on the same serotonin receptors.
What's Legally Different
In 2008, following several high-profile incidents involving tourists, the Dutch government added the fruiting bodies of psilocybin mushrooms to the Opium Act. The ban was written specifically around mushrooms — sclerotia were not included. Truffles therefore remained legal and are sold today through licensed Dutch smart shops, taxed and regulated as a commercial product. This is not a loophole that could close overnight; it has been the settled legal situation for over 17 years, confirmed by the Trimbos Institute, the Dutch government's own drug-information body.
What's Practically Different
Gram for gram, fresh truffles contain less psilocybin than dried mushrooms, so ceremonial doses are measured in larger quantities of fresh truffles. At a professional retreat this difference is irrelevant to you as a participant: dosing is calibrated to the material being used, your body, and your intention. The depth, duration, and transformative potential of a properly dosed truffle ceremony are equivalent to a mushroom ceremony — something confirmed both by participant reports and by the fact that Dutch retreat providers have run tens of thousands of legal truffle ceremonies since 2008.

Any provider offering actual magic mushrooms at a Dutch retreat is breaking the law — and exposing you to legal risk alongside them. More commonly, providers use "mushroom retreat" as marketing shorthand because that's what people search for, while actually (and legally) serving truffles. We use the term the same way on this page, for the same reason — but we believe you deserve to know exactly what you're consuming and why, before you commit to a retreat, not after you arrive.
This distinction is also a useful quality test. A provider that is vague about the mushroom/truffle difference, or implies you'll be taking "real mushrooms," is telling you something about their attitude to precision and law — two things you want to be non-negotiable in the people guiding your psychedelic experience.

- "Do you use mushrooms or truffles?" The only correct answer in the Netherlands is truffles. Anything else is a red flag — legally and ethically.
- "Who conducts medical screening, and what are your exclusion criteria?" Screening should be done by a medical professional, and a provider should be able to name conditions and medications they exclude (for example, lithium).
- "Who is physically present during the ceremony?" Ask specifically whether a medical doctor is on-site — not "on call."
- "What is your facilitator-to-participant ratio?" Ratios range from 1:2 to 1:6 across Dutch providers. Fewer participants per facilitator means faster attention if you need it.
- "What happens after the retreat?" Integration is where the experience becomes lasting change. Ask how many sessions are included and whether any are 1:1.

Is a truffle experience weaker than a mushroom experience?

Why do retreats in the Netherlands still say "mushroom retreat"?

Can I attend a mushroom retreat in Amsterdam?
Retreats do not typically take place in Amsterdam itself — Dutch retreat venues are in quieter, rural settings. Amsterdam-based offerings are usually short “ceremony evenings” rather than structured retreats. Do I have to buy the truffles myself?
Yes, and a trustworthy provider will explain why: for legal compliance, participants purchase their own truffles (around €50) from a licensed Dutch supplier. Could the Netherlands ban truffles too?
Nothing is impossible, but truffles have been legal for over 17 years, are sold through a licensed, taxed retail sector, and periodic political reviews have left the status unchanged.
