Truffle Retreats in the Netherlands: Species, Dosing, Legality & What to Expect
Psilocybin truffles are the foundation of every legal psychedelic retreat in the Netherlands — yet most retreat websites tell you almost nothing about them. This guide covers what experienced seekers actually want to know: which species are used and how they differ, how professional retreats determine your dose, where the truffles legally come from, and what a guided truffle ceremony looks like hour by hour. It reflects how we run our own medically supervised psilocybin retreat in the Netherlands, the 12-week EvoSHIFT program.
What Psilocybin Truffles Actually Are
"Truffle" is the everyday name for a sclerotium: a dense, compact mass of mycelium that certain Psilocybe species form underground as an energy reserve. It is not the mushroom (the above-ground fruiting body) — and that distinction is precisely why truffles are legal in the Netherlands while mushrooms are not. Biochemically, sclerotia produce the same active alkaloids as mushrooms: psilocybin, which your body converts to psilocin, the compound that temporarily changes how brain networks communicate.
Truffles are cultivated commercially in the Netherlands under food-safety conditions, sold fresh and vacuum-packed through licensed smart shops. Unlike foraged or home-grown material, commercial Dutch truffles are consistent: cultivated strains, stable potency ranges per variety, and no misidentification risk — one of the quiet but real safety advantages of a Dutch retreat over jurisdictions where material comes from informal sources.
The Species Used at Dutch Retreats
Nearly all commercially available truffles come from three closely related species. Retail brand names vary by shop; what matters is the species and the potency class.
| Species | Common names | Character | Typical use at retreats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Psilocybe tampanensis | "Philosopher's Stones" | The classic, best-documented truffle; balanced, moderately potent | The standard choice for first ceremonies |
| Psilocybe mexicana | often sold under variety names | The species from which sclerotia were first cultivated; gentle-to-moderate | Lower-intensity ceremonies, careful titration |
| Psilocybe galindoi (P. atlantis) | "Atlantis" and similar | Among the more potent commercial varieties | Experienced participants, deeper ceremonies |
At EvoSHIFT we work with established, well-characterized varieties rather than whatever a shop has in stock — consistency of material is a precondition for responsible dosing.
How Dosing Works at a Professional Retreat
Fresh truffles are roughly 70% water, so doses are measured in tens of grams of fresh material — numbers that sound large to people used to hearing dried-mushroom figures. Comparing raw gram counts across the two is meaningless; what matters is the psilocybin content, and professional providers dose by variety and potency class, not by weight alone.
More importantly: at a serious retreat, your dose is not a menu choice. At Evolute Institute, dosing is determined through your medical-psychological screening (conducted by a psychiatrist), your preparation conversations, your body, your prior experience, and your intention — and it is reviewed with you by the facilitation team, with a licensed medical doctor present at the ceremony itself. Participants can also work with a stepped approach: a base dose with the option of a supervised booster, which keeps the experience within the range you're prepared for rather than beyond it.
We deliberately do not publish self-dosing instructions. If you are considering an unguided experience, the honest advice from anyone who does this work professionally is: the dose is the least important safety variable. Screening, setting, and support are what determine outcomes.
Where the Truffles Come From — Sourcing and the Law
The Legal Basis
When the Netherlands banned psilocybin mushrooms in December 2008, the ban listed the mushrooms' fruiting bodies under the Opium Act. Sclerotia were not listed and remained legal — a status confirmed by the Trimbos Institute, the government-funded institute for mental health and addiction. Truffles are consequently produced, taxed, and sold as a regulated commercial product. This has been stable law for over 17 years: not a loophole, not a tolerance policy like coffee-shop cannabis, but simple legality.
How Sourcing Works at a Retreat
For full legal compliance, Evolute participants purchase their own truffles — around €50 — from a licensed Dutch provider before the ceremony. We explain exactly what to buy, where, and how much, as part of preparation. Treat this as a vetting signal when comparing providers: a retreat that hands you unidentified material of unstated origin, or bundles "mushrooms" into the price in the Netherlands, is cutting a legal corner you don't want to be standing on.
What a Guided Truffle Ceremony Actually Looks Like
The ceremony is one day inside a much longer arc — at EvoSHIFT, week 4 of 12. Here is how the ceremony day itself unfolds at our venue, Centrum Athanor:
- Morning — arrival into the day. Light practices, intention-setting, no breakfast beyond what facilitators advise. The group has already spent days together; the room is familiar, not strange.
- Late morning — ingestion. Truffles are prepared and consumed in a calm, structured setting. Onset is typically within 30–60 minutes.
- The journey — 4 to 6 hours. Participants lie down with eyeshades and a curated music program. Facilitators — one for every two participants — provide continuous, unobtrusive support. A licensed medical doctor is physically present for the entire ceremony. Support is there when wanted and never intrusive: this is your inner work, held in a professionally secured space.
- Late afternoon — landing. As effects subside, gentle grounding: quiet, tea, light food, optional brief sharing. No analysis is forced on the day itself.
- Evening and the days after. Rest, followed by structured group and 1:1 integration sessions in the following weeks — where the experience is turned into durable change.
The ceremony is the centerpiece — the 12 weeks around it are what make it last. See the full program, dates and pricing: EvoSHIFT — Psilocybin Truffle Retreat → · All upcoming retreats →
How Evolute Supports a Truffle Journey Differently
Most Dutch truffle retreats are 3-day events: arrive, ceremony, leave. Our position — supported by the clinical literature on preparation and integration — is that the substance is the catalyst, not the change. EvoSHIFT surrounds one profound truffle ceremony with twelve weeks of structure: psychiatrist-led screening before you're accepted, three preparation sessions, a 4-day immersion with an MD on-site and a 1:2 facilitator ratio, four 1:1 coaching conversations, and two months of integration. Our safety standards are published openly in our Utvärderingsramverk för psilocybin Retreat (PREF), which we also apply to ourselves in a public self-disclosure. Fifty-plus participants have rated the experience five stars on Trustpilot.

Vanliga frågor
Which truffle species is best for a first retreat?
There is no single “best” species — potency class and dosing matter more than the name on the package. For first ceremonies, well-characterized varieties of Psilocybe tampanensis are the common professional choice, dosed conservatively with the option of a supervised booster.
How many grams of truffles are used in a ceremony?
Published gram numbers mislead more than they inform, because fresh truffles vary by variety and water content. Professional retreats dose by potency class, individual screening, and intention — not a flat gram count. At EvoSHIFT your dose is set with the facilitation team during preparation.
Do truffles taste bad? Can they cause nausea?
Truffles have an earthy, slightly bitter, nutty taste most people find manageable. Mild transient nausea during onset is common with any psilocybin material; eating light beforehand (as facilitators advise) and settling into the space reduce it. A medical doctor is present throughout our ceremonies.
Are truffles safe to combine with medication?
Some combinations are genuinely dangerous — lithium in particular is associated with severe adverse reactions, and several psychiatric medications blunt or complicate the experience. This is exactly why screening at Evolute is conducted by a psychiatrist, in writing and in conversation, before acceptance. Never make medication changes without your own prescriber.
Can I buy truffles legally and take them home?
Truffles are legal to buy and use inside the Netherlands. Taking them across a border is illegal — psilocybin is controlled in virtually every other country. The legal experience exists only within the Netherlands, which is precisely why guided retreats here exist.
How strong is a truffle ceremony compared to clinical psilocybin studies?
Well-dosed ceremonial truffle experiences sit in the same experiential range clinical research describes with synthetic psilocybin — including complete mystical-type experiences at higher doses. The material differs; the neurochemistry does not.
What happens if I have a difficult experience during the ceremony?
Difficult passages are normal and often the most valuable part of the journey when properly supported. Our ratio of one facilitator per two participants means support is immediate, and the on-site MD covers the medical dimension. Difficult is workable; unsupported is what you should avoid.
